Mobile DNAs: The Poacher Turned Gamekeeper

نویسنده

چکیده

The selfish DNA hypothesis imagines the genome as an ecological community, a collection of interacting DNA sequences with differing evolutionary origins and potentially different interests. We are now finding out more about the ways in which host sequences can enlist the help of formerly parasitic DNAs.

The story of a poacher-turned-gamekeeper: a twist in animal evolution.

A retrovirus is an RNA virus. In a host cell, it typically replicates with the help of an enzyme reverse transcriptase to produce DNA from its RNA genome. The resulting DNA is incorporated into the genome of the host by an in tegrase enzyme. The v i rus thereaf te r rep l ica tes as par t o f the hos t DNA. Keith Sutherland Straw Men and Diamond Dogs

John Gray, Professor of European Thought at the London School of Economics and the author of the book under review should not be confused with the John Gray who thinks that men are from Mars and women from Venus. Our man is a political philosopher, best known for a string of books on liberalism and a lot less sanguine about the prospects for humanity than his New Age namesake. In fact, perhaps ...

Absent virtues: the poacher becomes gamekeeper.

Since its inception, bioethics' principled stance has been to argue against paternalism and elitism, and for an inclusive ethical perspective. But at least in North America, the growth of bioethics as a special area of applied ethics has created conflicts within the field itself. Those who, a generation earlier, argued against paternalism and for both professional and public accountability in m...

Reconstructing the complex evolutionary history of mobile plasmids in red algal genomes

The integration of foreign DNA into algal and plant plastid genomes is a rare event, with only a few known examples of horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Plasmids, which are well-studied drivers of HGT in prokaryotes, have been reported previously in red algae (Rhodophyta). However, the distribution of these mobile DNA elements and their sites of integration into the plastid (ptDNA), mitochondrial...
